Thank you, families for all of your help and support in Room 4 this year! Enjoy your holiday with your families. I look forward to seeing everyone in January!

Week of September 9-13, 2013

Hello Room 4 Families,
We had a fabulous first week of school in Room 4. Your children have been working hard and making friends. I can tell it's going to be a great year!

Important Dates:

Friday, 9/13; "Tie Day": Kids can wear something that can be "tied." They can wear a tie, something that is tie-dyed, or something else that can be "tied." Feel free to get creative.

Friday, 9/13: movie night. This is a fun night out for Phoebe families. The movie, which is a surprise, begins at dark. There will be food available for purchase. Bring a blanket and chairs and enjoy!

Tuesday, 9/17, 5:30pm: back-to-school night. At this event I will share important room 4 information regarding class procedures, homework, field trips, etc.

Field Trips and Fingerprinting
In order to accompany the class on field trips, parents/guardians must be fingerprinted with the district. Once you are fingerprinted this year, you won't have to go through the process again. It does take 4-6 weeks for fingerprints to clear, so I encourage you to do this as soon as possible. The form for this came in the first day packet. We are planning a pumpkin patch field trip for the end of October, and I want parents to be able to come with us!

Homework
We will begin homework next week, September 16th. Each week the students will have a packet to complete. They will have two pages each night, Monday thru Thursday. On Thursday afternoons, I will email the following week's packet to you for you to print and have your child complete. I do it this way because we are on a very tight budget this year and I just don't have enough copies allocated to me to be able to make homework and classwork copies.

Parent Volunteers
Thank you to those parents who have signed up to help in and outside the classroom this year! For those of you who signed up to help with our morning centers time, this will not begin until the 23rd of September. I will give more information about this time at Back-to-School night. If you haven't had a chance to sign up, the sheet is in the back of room 4; stop by any time.

Thanks for reading, parents! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at carrie.relles@gmail.com or carrie-relles@scusd.edu or stop by before or after school.
Have a great weekend!

We will be reading lots of books about starting school and about how to be a good friend. We will do a lot of talking, drawing, and writing about starting school, making friends, and treating each other with respect.

One book we will read this week is called "Have You Filled a Bucket Today?" This book teaches kids that we all have an invisible bucket we carry around with us. When our bucket is full we feel good, and when our bucket is empty we feel bad. The book says we can fill each others' buckets with kind words and actions. This is called bucket filling. We can also dip into peoples' buckets when we say or do unkind things. This is called bucket dipping. Talk to your child about what they have learned from this book, and reinforce this "bucket" language at home if possible.

Thanks for reading, everyone! Enjoy your Labor Day weekend. If you ever have any questions or concerns please feel free to email me any time at either Carrie-relles@scusd.edu or carrie.relles@gmail.com
I check both daily.
I will see your kids on Tuesday!

Here's what we have coming up:

Saturday, May 18: PTO Art Walk, 10am-1pm. This should be a great event. The kids' artwork from the year will be displayed around the school, there will be activities, and food will be for sale with proceeds coming directly back to our school.
Monday, May 27: Memorial Day; NO SCHOOL
Wednesday, May 29: Open House; 6:15-7:30pm. This is your opportunity to come check out some of the work we've been doing in room 4. The evening will begin on the main yard with information and announcements from Mrs. Egan at 6:15.
Friday, May 31: Free Dress; Jog-a-thon day. I will let you know what time the kindergartners are running when I get the schedule. Jog-a-thon pledges are due to school by May 24th.
Thursday, June 6th: Kindergarten Sports Day, 8:30-9:45am. Several of you have asked if you can volunteer that day. Of course you are always welcome to come! 6th grade students will be running each station. Please make sure your kids wear good shoes for running that day.
Thursday, June 13th: Last day of school. We will have a class party/actvity time from 9-11. I will let you know more when I figure it out! Dismissal will be at 12:20.

This week we are continuing our last curriculum unit called By the Sea as well as working on a garden unit focusing on the common core standards that will be replacing the California state standards.
The kids are writing and reading so much. Most of them have gotten in the habit of writing paragraphs with topic and concluding sentences, and they have begun to read and spell words with long vowels.
We will have lots of writing on display at Open House.

Math
We have completed all of the chapters in our math curriculum! We will spend the next couple of weeks working on money: recognizing coins and counting pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. After that we will look ahead to first grade standards.

Science
Our science this week ties into our school-wide garden unit. The kids planted seeds last week and they are keeping garden journals to track the growth and changes they see in their plants. They are loving this so far.

Thanks for everything, parents and families! Please email me with any questions or concerns.

I still need a couple of parent volunteers for our centers time (8:10-8:50) on Tuesdays and Thursdays, if anyone is interested in working in the classroom. This week we will have a centers time on Friday if anyone would like to help then!

100th day of school/Valentine's Day:
We have been counting our days in school and looking forward to the 100th day all year! This year the 100th day happens to fall on February 14. We will celebrate both day 100 and Valentine's day. We would love to have parents help with this! We will be doing a longer centers time on this day--8:10-9:10--and we need 1 more parent volunteer for this. We will celebrate Valentine's day at 12:15 by passing out cards. The kids are welcome to have a valentine for each classmate to pass out that day. I will provide more information as this day gets closer.

Thanks, parents and families, for everything you do! Enjoy your three-day weekend!

Week of January 14-18, 2013

Hello Room 4 families,
Happy New Year! I hope you all had a relaxing, enjoyable holiday with your families. We are back to work in room 4. The kids really didn't miss a beat this week as they got back into our routines.

Important dates:
Wednesday, January 16: Open enrollment tour for prospective students, 9am. Please let friends who are interested in learning more about Phoebe Hearst know.
Monday, January 21: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day; no school
Friday, January 25: free dress day
Friday, February 8: PTO Family Dance, 6-8 pm

Language Arts:
This week we are continuing our unit on the wind. We will be focusing on the sounds of /h/, /t/, and short o. The kids will be listening for, writing, and reading words with these sounds.
New high frequency words: like and too.
We will be writing paragraphs about what we would do if we lived in a snow globe.

Math:
This week we will finish the chapter on numbers 11-20. We will work on counting to, writing, and comparing numbers 11-20.
We continue to review past concepts during Board Math

Science:
We are continuing our unit on animals. We will be comparing and contrasting different animals, talking about animal habitats, and learning about parts of insects.

If you would like to volunteer during our centers time from 8:10-8:50, we still need 3 more volunteers: one for Tuesdays, one for Wednesdays, and one for Thursdays.

Thanks, parents, for everything you do! Please email me at carrie-relles@scusd.edu if you have any questions or concerns.
