Week of October 1, 2012

Hello Room 4 Families!
It's amazing that we are starting our second month of school. Your kids continue to work hard and try their best every day.

Language arts this week:
New high frequency words: I and see
This week we will be finishing our School unit and beginning unit 2, Shadows. We will begin reading and learning about different shadows, what we need to make a shadow, and who/what has shadows.
We are continuing to focus on learning to recognize and form letters. This week we will practice Kk, Ll, Mm, and Nn.
We are going to finish up our autobiographies this week. Our writing this unit will focus mostly on writing about shadows.

Math: This week we will finish chapter 2 on numbers 0 to 5. Our objectives for the week are the read and write zero, to compare numbers 0 to 5, to draw a picture to help sove a problem, and to order numbers 0 to 5. The kids will take the chapter test on Friday.

Social Studies: This week we continue our first unit on learning to work together. We will have lessons on sharing, following rules, problem solving, and respect.

Field Trip:
Our first field trip will be this month! We are going to Dave's Pumpkin Patch in West Sacramento on Friday, October 26th. The cost for this trip is $5.50 per student. This pays for a hayride, a corn maze, a small pumpkin, and an activity book. Please send cash to school as soon as possible. We will leave school at 9 am and return around 12.
Any parents who have been fingerprinted and would like to accompany us on this trip, we would love to have you! Please let me know as soon as possible.

October newsletters: Parents, please see your child's homework folder on Monday for a packet with October school and PTO newletters and calendars. These will typically go home the first Monday of each month.
In it you will find information regarding the Home Run Readers program, which our class will be participating in. This program will replace the homework reading log. On Monday we will attend the kick-off for this event.

Classroom playdates:
Classroom parent Carolyn Stallings would like to start organizing some afternoon/weekend park playdates for room 4 students to get to know each other and play outside of school. If you are interested in joining this group, please email Carolyn at carolynstallingsot@yahoo.com

Thank you to the Rojas and Weathers families for donating smocks to the classroom! Your kids did their first paintings last week. Come check them out!
As always, if you have any questions or concerns please email me at carrie-relles@scusd.edu
Thanks for reading! Have a great week!

Week of September 24, 2012

Hello Room 4 Families!
Thank you again to everyone who came to Back-to-School night. I truly appreciate your attendance and your questions. I hope you found the evening worthwhile.

Important dates this week:
Friday, September 28: Free dress day. Students may wear non-uniform clothes as long as they are school appropriate.

Language Arts Updates:
This week we will continue our first unit, School.
We will be working on recognizng and producing rhyming words every day. The ability to rhyme and manipulate sounds in words has a strong correlation with later reading success. So lots of practice now will pay off later!
New high frequency words: the, a, an, here, is
We are continuing to focus on recognizing and forming upper and lowercase letters. This week we will practice Gg, Hh, Ii, and Jj.
In writing we are continuing work on autobiographies and learning about the phases of the writing process.

Math:
We are beginning chapter 2, "Numbers 0 to 5", this week.
Our vocabulary for the week is  count, one, two, three, number, four, and five.
This week we will be working on recognizing, naming, counting to, and writing numbers 1 to 5.

Social Studies: We are continuing unit 1: "Learning to Work Together".

We are still in need of smocks the kids can wear while painting! If anyone would like to donate this would be wonderful!

Thank you to those parents who volunteered in the classroom last week! Our centers time ran very smoothly because of your help. You are all welcome to volunteer any time. Just let me know the day before.

As always, please don't hesitate to ask if you have a question. The best way to reach me is by email at carrie-relles@scusd.edu
Thank you and have a great weekend!

Week of September 17, 2012

Hello Room 4 Families!
We had a great second week!
Important dates this week:
~Back-to-School Night is this Wednesday September 19th at 6:15
Mrs. Egan will do an information session on the blacktop at 6:15, and the session in room 4 will begin after that. I will go over my procedures, curricula, expectations, etc.
This week in Language Arts we are continuing our unit on School. The kids are learning about school helpers, like our principal and office manager. We are beginning to go through each letter of the alphabet: each day we read a poem in our Alphabet Big Book and practice forming a new letter on wipe boards. We have also begun to work on our first writing project, an autobiography. As we work on this I am introducing the phases of the writing process: getting ideas/brainstorming, prewriting, drafting, revising, proofreading, and publishing.

This week in math we will finish our first chapter on sorting and classifying. This week's objectives are to show equal groups, to identify a group with more, and to identify a group with less. The kids will take their first chapter test at the end of the week.

We are beginning Social Studies this week. Our first unit is titled Learning to Work Together, and in it we will be learning all about how friends get along.

Thank you to those parents who volunteered to help with our centers time during the first hour of class. This will begin this week. The kids have been practicing how to move from center to center and they are anxious to have parents in the room helping with new activities!
If I did not contact you about helping with centers and it is something you would like to do, we do need a couple more helpers on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Please email me or let me know in person!

Our classroom is in need of painting/art smocks! If anyone has anything we can use as smocks, we would love to have them. Old button-down shirts work great because the kids can put them on backwards on their own.
Please email me if you have any questions or concerns.

Week of September 10, 2012

Hello Room 4 Families!
The first week of school was spectacular. Your children are friendly, kind, and hard working. I feel so lucky to be spending my days with them!
This week we will be working more on curriculum as we practice the procedures and routines we learned last week.
The first unit in our language arts curriculum, Open Court Reading, is called School. We will be reading stories and poems about kindergarten and school. We will also be practicing writing letters and first and last names. When writing names, please help your child begin with a capital letter and write the rest in lower case. We will be reading several rhymes such as "One Two Buckle my Shoe". Practice rhyming words with your child. Ask him or her to think of rhyming words for a word you say (their rhymes can be real or nonsense words).
In math, we will be beginning chapter one on sorting and classifying. The math vocabulary for this week is: same, different, sort, and equal groups. We will begin by looking at how objects are the same and different, and then move to sorting objects by one and then more than one attribute. For example, we may sort shapes of various sizes and colors first by shape and then by color.
Homework also begins this week! Your child will be taking home a folder with a homework packet each Monday. The completed packets are due back to school on Friday morning. Your child will have a weekly reading log and one math and one language arts page to complete each night. Please complete the pages as they are assigned and try not to let your kids do the whole packet in one night! I would like them to do a little work each night.
Thank you to those families who turned in the forms from the first day packets. There were some questions about the emergency cards. The office does need two cards for each student, so if you didn't fill out and return both, please do so. Thanks!
Thank you also to those parents who have expressed interest in volunteering, either during the school day or at home. For those parents who signed up to help during the first hour of school for centers time, this will begin next Monday, September 17. For those parents who would like to help in the room before then, you are more than welcome to! Please just send me an email the night before you plan on coming in and I will be sure to have something ready for you to do. I also have some projects that parents can take home to work on. Again, please send me an email and we can arrange pick up for these items.
Whew! I know this was a lot of information. Thank you for reading, and please email me if you have any questions! carrie-relles@scusd.edu
