Week of January 28-February 1, 2019

We had another super week in Room 4. Be sure to come in and check out everyone's resolutions for 2019. They are hanging on the windows in the classroom and they're fabulous!

Here is what we have coming up:

Important Dates

Monday, 2/11: NO SCHOOL; Lincoln's Birthday

Wednesday, 2/13: the 100th day of school. The kids are super excited to celebrate the number 100 and everything they have learned so far this year! During the days leading up to this the kids will have two extra homework assignments: First, they will need to bring in a collection of 100 items displayed in a creative way. They can get as creative as they want with this! I shared some ideas and showed them past projects, so they should be getting their own ideas and starting to work on their projects. These are due no later than Friday, february 8. On the 100th day they will share their collection.
Second, I sent home ziploc baggies with kids' names on them. They will need to count 100 of some household item, put them in the bag and bring it to school . We will be using these for a few lessons while we count down to day 100. These are also due on or before the 8th.

We additionally need a few food items for this day for our 100th day trail mix.  There is a sign-up for this in the back of the classroom. Thanks to those who have signed up!

Finally, we would love to have some extra parent help for our centers time on the 100th day (Wed, Feb 13th) from 8 until about 9. Sign up in the back of room 4!

Thursday, 2/14 Valentine's day. We will have a small celebration after lunch. Kids can bring in Valentine cards for the class, but I ask that they only write their names rather than writing who each card is for. This eliminates A LOT of unnecessary confusion

Monday 2/18: NO SCHOOL; Presidents' Day Holiday

Language Arts

We are into our  unit about technology at school and home. We've read some stories that have led to some good discussions about technology and why people use it. This week we will read about technology in the past and now.
Our letter focus this week is the short u sound as in umbrella. We will work on writing, reading and spelling words with this sound.

Math
This week we will wrap up module 3 on comparison of length, weight, capacity, and numbers to 10.

Thanks for reading! Please don't hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns.

Phoebe's Got Talent--school talent show. Please see below from Mr. Henrickson, our talent show guy:

Attached is the tryout/information form for Phoebe’s Got Talent 2019 which includes three important dates; our show is open to all students K-6.  We have amazing and talented students, and the show is a lot of fun! Students will tryout during lunch in the library; after the forms have been collected, we will put out a tryout schedule.  As we make the difficult decision of who makes the show, we don’t expect a finished product for the initial tryout.  The tryouts usually last 1-2 minutes, and we are looking for organization and potential.  The key to making the show is the ability to demonstrate energy, enthusiasm, and fun!

The show takes place on the stage at Sutter Middle School in front of a couple hundred people.  Will the act translate in that setting?  How can you make your act bigger? Louder? More energetic? That is what we are looking for!

If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch with me.

Thanks.
Mr. Henrikson

Homework Update
From now on kids will have fewer pages to complete each night with the expectation they put forth more effort on the pages they do have. They will continue to have daily math pages, which correspond to that day's teaching. Language arts pages will for the most part be writing pages. Kids will get two writing pages per week that they can break up any way they'd like. They should do their personal best on each of these writing pages. They should continue to sound out words. Phonetic spelling is what we are all about, so don't worry about spelling! As long as there are spaces between each word I can read kinder writing.

Language Arts
This week kids will take a (listening) comprehension test as we finish our 4th language arts unit on authors and storytelling.
We will begin unit 5, in which we will be reading and learing about technology at home and school.

Math
This week we will work on making sets with one more and one less than a given set and continue to work on comparing numbers.

Please don't hesitate to contact me with questions and/or concerns!
Thanks for reading, everyone!
