Week of January 7-11, 2013

Hello Room 4 Families!
It's hard to believe 2013 is almost here. Here's what we have going on in our classroom:

Important dates:
January 7: first day back at school
Wednesday, January 9: Open enrollment tour. If you know anyone interested in having their kids attend Phoebe Hearst next year, please encourage them to attend a tour!
January 21: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day; no school
Friday, January 25: Free dress day
Friday February 8: PTO family dance, 6-8 pm

Language Arts: We are continuing our unit on the wind this week. We have been turning over our classroom phonics cards and working on identifying orally, reading, and writing words with our target sound/letter for the day. This week we will work on d, m, s, p, and short a. The kids are doing a really good job with this. I am able to challenge them frequently with these lessons.
New sight word: at
At the end of this week we will begin working with verbs.
Our writing this week will be about new year's resolutions/goals for 2013.

Math: This week we will begin a chapter on numbers 11-20.
The kids will learn to recognize, count objects up to, and write numbers to 20. We will continue to review past concepts during Board Math.

Science: This week we will begin a life science unit on animals.

Centers time note: Beginning this week our centers time is going to be 40 minutes long rather than an hour as it has been since September. The kids will complete 3 centers each day Monday through Thursday, and we will not have centers time on Fridays. This will give us more time to work on our phonics and writing lessons, which are beginning to be very involved! A HUGE thank you to the parents who have volunteered their time since September during our centers time. If you would like to start volunteering during centers from 8:10-8:50, please let me know. I do have a few spots I would like to fill on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

THANK YOU, families for the generous Christmas gift you gave me! I appreciate your thoughtfulness, and I'm looking forward to doing some shopping during break. :)
Thank you, also, to those parents who helped out at our holiday party today. It would not have been possible without you! A special thank you to Carolyn Stallings and Jacqui DeBoo for organizing.

Enjoy your holiday everyone! See you in 2013!

If you would like to bring items for the holiday party, there is information in the back of the classroom.

New sight words: can, what, and you.
Writing: we will finish our writing about how to dress a snowman, and do an opinion piece on a story we read.
We will continue to work on adjectives that describe the five senses and position words.

Thanks for all you do, parents!

Week of December 3-7, 2012

Hello Room 4 Families!
Here is what's happening in room 4 this week:

Friday, December 7: Craft Faire, 6-8 pm

Language Arts:
New sight words: are and in

We will continue to orally blend and clap out the syllables in words. We have also been writing words using the kids' expert letters, and they are doing very well with this. Encourage your kids to practice writing 3 and 4 letters words as much as possible.

We are continuing to talk about finding friends. If your kids have a book to share that fits with this theme they are welcome to bring it in.

In writing we will begin paragraph called "If I had a reindeer..."

We will review adjectives that describe how many and what color.

Math:
In math we will continue to work on graphing. Each day the kids will be doing a yes/no graph that I have created. This will lead to them coming up with their own yes/no question and collecting their own data.
They are enjoying graphing so far, and doing really well with it.

Thank you to the parents who have been helping out in our room! We couldn't do what we do without your help! If you would like to volunteer all are welcome. I will also have more take-home projects shortly.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. You can email me any time. carrie-relles@scusd.edu

Week of November 26-30, 2012

Hello Room 4 families,
I hope you're all enjoying Thanksgiving break.
Here's what is happening in room 4 next week:

Important dates:
Friday, November 30: Free dress day and picture make-up/retake day.

Language arts:
This week we are continuing our Finding Friends unit. Your kids are welcome to bring in a book to share with the class that goes with this theme.
I have introduced consonant sounds by assigning the kids letters they are the "experts" of. If they have anything to share with the class that begins with their expert letter, they can bring it in any day this week.
New sight words: do, has, and who.
In writing we will begin to go through each step of the writing process (getting ideas, prewriting, drafting, revising, proofreading, publishing) as we work on writing notes to a friend or family member.
This week we will continue oral blending with word parts (I say two parts of a word and the kids put it together) and syllable clapping. They love syllable clapping, so the more you practice this at home, the better they will be!

Math:
We are starting a chapter on collecting data and graphing. The objectives this week will be to collect data from a picture and record it onto a graph and to make and read a concrete graph. The kids will practice these skills in the homework as well.

We are still looking for old puzzle pieces for an art project! If you have any old puzzles (with small pieces) at home that you'd like to get rid of, please bring them by room 4. We will use them in December for an art project with our 5th grade buddies.

Thank you for your time! Enjoy the rest of your time with your family!
Please email me if you have any questions.

Week of September 17, 2012

Hello Room 4 Families!
We had a great second week!
Important dates this week:
~Back-to-School Night is this Wednesday September 19th at 6:15
Mrs. Egan will do an information session on the blacktop at 6:15, and the session in room 4 will begin after that. I will go over my procedures, curricula, expectations, etc.
This week in Language Arts we are continuing our unit on School. The kids are learning about school helpers, like our principal and office manager. We are beginning to go through each letter of the alphabet: each day we read a poem in our Alphabet Big Book and practice forming a new letter on wipe boards. We have also begun to work on our first writing project, an autobiography. As we work on this I am introducing the phases of the writing process: getting ideas/brainstorming, prewriting, drafting, revising, proofreading, and publishing.

This week in math we will finish our first chapter on sorting and classifying. This week's objectives are to show equal groups, to identify a group with more, and to identify a group with less. The kids will take their first chapter test at the end of the week.

We are beginning Social Studies this week. Our first unit is titled Learning to Work Together, and in it we will be learning all about how friends get along.

Thank you to those parents who volunteered to help with our centers time during the first hour of class. This will begin this week. The kids have been practicing how to move from center to center and they are anxious to have parents in the room helping with new activities!
If I did not contact you about helping with centers and it is something you would like to do, we do need a couple more helpers on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Please email me or let me know in person!

Our classroom is in need of painting/art smocks! If anyone has anything we can use as smocks, we would love to have them. Old button-down shirts work great because the kids can put them on backwards on their own.
Please email me if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks for reading! Have a great week!

Week of September 10, 2012

Hello Room 4 Families!
The first week of school was spectacular. Your children are friendly, kind, and hard working. I feel so lucky to be spending my days with them!
This week we will be working more on curriculum as we practice the procedures and routines we learned last week.
The first unit in our language arts curriculum, Open Court Reading, is called School. We will be reading stories and poems about kindergarten and school. We will also be practicing writing letters and first and last names. When writing names, please help your child begin with a capital letter and write the rest in lower case. We will be reading several rhymes such as "One Two Buckle my Shoe". Practice rhyming words with your child. Ask him or her to think of rhyming words for a word you say (their rhymes can be real or nonsense words).
In math, we will be beginning chapter one on sorting and classifying. The math vocabulary for this week is: same, different, sort, and equal groups. We will begin by looking at how objects are the same and different, and then move to sorting objects by one and then more than one attribute. For example, we may sort shapes of various sizes and colors first by shape and then by color.
Homework also begins this week! Your child will be taking home a folder with a homework packet each Monday. The completed packets are due back to school on Friday morning. Your child will have a weekly reading log and one math and one language arts page to complete each night. Please complete the pages as they are assigned and try not to let your kids do the whole packet in one night! I would like them to do a little work each night.
Thank you to those families who turned in the forms from the first day packets. There were some questions about the emergency cards. The office does need two cards for each student, so if you didn't fill out and return both, please do so. Thanks!
Thank you also to those parents who have expressed interest in volunteering, either during the school day or at home. For those parents who signed up to help during the first hour of school for centers time, this will begin next Monday, September 17. For those parents who would like to help in the room before then, you are more than welcome to! Please just send me an email the night before you plan on coming in and I will be sure to have something ready for you to do. I also have some projects that parents can take home to work on. Again, please send me an email and we can arrange pick up for these items.
Whew! I know this was a lot of information. Thank you for reading, and please email me if you have any questions! carrie-relles@scusd.edu

We will talk and write about what we did to get ready for kindergarten, and about what our goals are for this year. We will also read books about school rules and being a good friend to classmates. Talk to your kids about what they want to learn this year and what rules and/or procedures they learned each day.

In math we will be taking a diagnostic test, exploring math manipulatives, and learning procedures for math lessons.

Beginning next week, students will have daily math homework and a weekly language arts homework packet. In addition, they will have a reading log to record their daily reading.
I will provide homework folders they can use to take their homework to and from school.

Thanks for reading! Please feel free to email me with any questions!
