Week of September 21, 2015

Hello room 4 families!
Our first full week of school has been very busy. We have settled in to a very good routine, and the kids have been impressing me every day with how hard they work. Thank you again to every who came to Back-to-School Night. I enjoyed talking to all of you.
Here is what we have coming up:

Important dates:

Monday 9/21: our first art lesson with the fabulous Ms. Jane. Be sure to ask your child about what s/he learned!

Friday 9/25: movie night; 6:30 pm

Friday 9/25: kindergarten "Apple Day"--- we will be celebrating Johnny Appleseed and work on several Apple-themed lessons. I am hoping some of you will send in food for us to taste and write about. We need: Apple juice (2 gallons), apple sauce (2 large jars), a package of small cups (for the juice),  plastic spoons, and small paper plates. If you can send any of these items this week please let me know. Additionally, please send your child to school that day with an apple. We will use them for several lessons and then eat them.

Language Arts:
This week we will focus on the letters E, F, G, and H. We will work on rhyming and listening for first, middle, and last spoken words.
Our new sight words this week are a, an, here, and is.
We will begin writing sentences using sight words and the letter sounds we know.

Math:
The kids did an excellent job overall with their first math test on Thursday. Stop in and check them out in the classroom this week!
This week we begin chapter 2 on comparing and ordering numbers 0-5. You will see these concepts in our nightly homework. Each homework page corresponds to the lesson we will work on that day, so try not to skip ahead with the math this week!

Decodable and Pre-Decodable books:
On Friday your child should have taken home their first pre-decodable book, "The Park". The purpose of these books is for children to practice print concepts and sight words. They will get about one book a week, so I encouraged them in class to keep them in a safe spot together and practice them. They should point to the words as they read. Next week's book will have all of our new sight words to practice.

Thank you for reading, everyone. Please let me know if you have questions. Have a super weekend.
