Week of September 28-October 2, 2015

Hello Room 4 families! It's been another fantastic week in room 4. We loved having our first parent volunteers and the kids enjoyed Apple day. Thanks to everyone!

Here is what we have coming up:

Important dates:
Friday 10/2: room 4 to work in the school garden, 10:15 am. We would love to have a few parents to help during this time. Please let me know if you're available.
Saturday, 10/24: Harvest Festival.
Friday, 10/30: Jog-a-Thon. Please see the October newsletter for more information.

Language arts
This week we continue to work on recognizing letters shapes and forming letters correctly. We will focus on Ii, Jj, Kk, and Ll.
This week's new sight words: I and see
We have begun our first reading comprehension unit on telling stories from pictures and illustrations. We have looked at many wordless books and discussed what the characters are doing, what they are saying, and where they are. This lays the foundation not only for understanding the stories we read, but also for becoming good storytellers ourselves. We have been getting our own ideas for realistic and imaginary stories we can tell using illustrations.

Math
This week we will finish up our chapter on comparing and ordering numbers to 5. We will take the chapter test on Monday 10/5.
Chapter 3 will focus on numbers six through ten.

Wish list items
We have a new drawing table out at recess. If you have any paper to donate (any color, size, or density) we would appreciate it. You can drop off in room 4 any time.
The kids also enjoy using extra large Lego-like blocks at recess. If you have some at home your kids no longer use please consider sending them to school.

Lost and Found
We are starting quite a collection in the back of room 4. With cool mornings and warm afternoons kids take off their sweaters and forget to hang them up or leave them on the yard. If you're missing anything, come check what we have in the back off the room. As a reminder, please label all outerwear with your child's name.

Thanks for reading! Please email me with any questions.

Week of September 21, 2015

Hello room 4 families!
Our first full week of school has been very busy. We have settled in to a very good routine, and the kids have been impressing me every day with how hard they work. Thank you again to every who came to Back-to-School Night. I enjoyed talking to all of you.
Here is what we have coming up:

Important dates:

Monday 9/21: our first art lesson with the fabulous Ms. Jane. Be sure to ask your child about what s/he learned!

Friday 9/25: movie night; 6:30 pm

Friday 9/25: kindergarten "Apple Day"--- we will be celebrating Johnny Appleseed and work on several Apple-themed lessons. I am hoping some of you will send in food for us to taste and write about. We need: Apple juice (2 gallons), apple sauce (2 large jars), a package of small cups (for the juice),  plastic spoons, and small paper plates. If you can send any of these items this week please let me know. Additionally, please send your child to school that day with an apple. We will use them for several lessons and then eat them.

Language Arts:
This week we will focus on the letters E, F, G, and H. We will work on rhyming and listening for first, middle, and last spoken words.
Our new sight words this week are a, an, here, and is.
We will begin writing sentences using sight words and the letter sounds we know.

Math:
The kids did an excellent job overall with their first math test on Thursday. Stop in and check them out in the classroom this week!
This week we begin chapter 2 on comparing and ordering numbers 0-5. You will see these concepts in our nightly homework. Each homework page corresponds to the lesson we will work on that day, so try not to skip ahead with the math this week!

Decodable and Pre-Decodable books:
On Friday your child should have taken home their first pre-decodable book, "The Park". The purpose of these books is for children to practice print concepts and sight words. They will get about one book a week, so I encouraged them in class to keep them in a safe spot together and practice them. They should point to the words as they read. Next week's book will have all of our new sight words to practice.

Thank you for reading, everyone. Please let me know if you have questions. Have a super weekend.

Week of September 14-18, 2015

Hello Room 4 families!
I keep this webpage instead of sending home weekly newsletters. Please check here on Fridays to find out what is happening in room 4.

The kids have done a marvelous job this week with learning our school and classroom rules, getting to know one another, and working on some kindergarten curriculum! Hopefully your child has talked to you about some of his or her new friends and some of the things we have been working on in class. Please check your child's backpack daily for completed work. All work that is completed and sent home does not need to come back to school.

Here is what we have coming up:

Wednesday, September 16: Back-to-School night, 6-7 pm. This is a night for parents to come and hear about everything we do in room 4. I will go over our day, curriculum, kindergarten standards, and answer any questions you have. Please meet on the main playground at 6 for some information from Mr. McGill before heading over to room 4.

Friday, September 25: Phoebe Hearst movie night, 6:30 pm

Friday, September 25: Kindergarten Apple Day. On this day we ask all kinder students to bring an apple to school. We will use them for several lessons throughout the day and then have a nutritious snack! The apple can be any size or color.

5th Grade Reading Buddies
Today the kids will be meeting their 5th grade buddy from Mr/ Goul's class in room 8. We will meet with our buddies on most Friday mornings to read, work in the garden, and complete projects together. Be sure to ask your child about his or her buddy this afternoon!

Language Arts
Next week we will begin focusing on a letter each day. We will work on correct letter formation and talk about the sounds the letters make. We will read poems that focus on the letters and complete workbook pages.
I will introduce the first sight word next week: the

Math
Next week we will continue working on numbers 1-5. We will take our first math test at the end of the week.

I sent the first homework packet via email today. I send these on Fridays to give everyone plenty of time to get them printed, etc. These are due back the following Friday in the homework folders, which are going home today. Please let me know if you have questions about this.

Thank you for reading, everyone!
Please do not hesitate to email, call, or come by room 4 if you have questions or concerns. I look forward to speaking with all parents on Wednesday at Back-to-School night!
