Week of April 1-5, 2019

Hi Families,
It's such a fun time of year to be a kindergartener and a kindergarten teacher! The kids have been working away the past couple of weeks on lots of reading, writing, art, math, and we even got to go for a quick Friday run.  Stop by any time to check out all our work!

Here is what we have coming up:

Important Dates
Friday, 4/5: The Phoebe Hearst Event at the Turn Verein. For new parents, this is a really fun night to get to know other parents, relax with with friends, and help our school's technology program!
Please be sure to look for and bid on the silent auction item Mrs. Corcoran and I are offering together: a "Lunchtime Luau" for 12 kids. The winning bidder from each class (rooms 1 and 4) will invite 5 friends to the party which will happen one day this spring during our lunchtime. We will have pizza, dessert, games, costumes and prizes!
Each year our art teacher Ms. Jane works with each grade level to create beautiful original works of art for the live auction. The theme this year is "What a Wonderful World", and the kinders created a piece titled "Rainbow Unicorn". I will send photos this week, as it's almost finished.

Week of April 15-19: SPRING BREAK; no school

Language Arts
This week we will wrap up a unit on Holidays and Celebrations. We will work on the sound and spellings for the /j/ sound, and we will begin a final opinion paragraph.

Math
We will work this week on decomposing 9 and 10 into number pairs. Please look for lots of number bonds and equations in the homework!

Thanks for reading! Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns.

Week of March 18-22, 2019

Hello Families,
Spring is almost here! We have been having a great time in room 4 with lots of reading, writing, and math. I am impressed every day with the work your children are doing. Please remember to keep reading with them and having them read to you every day.

Here is what's coming up:

March 18-22: shortened days. I will walk the class to lunch at 11:40. They can eat lunch until 12, or you can pick them up at 11:40.

Thursday 3/21: Phoebe's Got Talent, 5:30pm at Sutter Middle School.

Friday 3/29: Last Friday of the month free dress

Language Arts
Next week kids will take a comprehension test and we will begin unit 7, "Holidays and Celebrations". In this unit students read and compare slections about different holdays and celebrations around the world. The essential question we will refer to after each story is, "Why do we celebrate people and events?"

Math
Next week we will begin working on subtraction from numbers to 8. We will begin using drawings to find how many are left in stories and move to using subtraction equations.

THANK YOU!
Thanks to all of the parents who chaperoned our Folsom Zoo trip! The kids enjoyed themselves and loved talking about what they learned about the animals.

Report cards will go home at the end of this week! If, after looking through your child's report card you have any questions or concerns, please schedule a conference with me! I am happy to meet with everone.

Thanks for reading!

As with all spirit days, these are totally optional, and if your child chooses not to participate s/he should wear a school uniform.

We will finish up opinion paragraphs explaining why we would rather ice skate or go sledding.
We will focus on the /g/ sound in phonics lessons.

Math
This week we will continue working with compostions and decompositions of numbers to 10. Look for the number bonds to lead into word problems and equations in the homework.
