Week of December 14-18, 2015

Hello families,
It's hard to believe we are starting our final school week of 2015. Your kids are amazing and have come so far in the past 4 months. I am so lucky to be their teacher.

As always, we have a busy week coming up:

Important Dates

Thursday, December 17: Kids will be sharing their informational posters about an animal with the class. If your child has not yet brought in a picture of their animal, please help them do so no later than Tuesday 12/15.

Friday, December 18: Free dress day/Room 4 winter celebration, 12-1 pm. We will be decorating cookies, singing songs, and making a couple of crafts. If you'd like to help out that day please let me know. If you'd like to help by sending in cookies or decorating items, there is a sign-up sheet in room 4.

Friday, January 15: Kindergarten field trip to see the Sacramento Theater Company's performance of James and the Giant Peach. If you haven't done so already, please send in $6 for your child's ticket. I need to send in the money early next week. Thank you!

Language Arts

We will finish up learning about the features of informational text, and the kids will finish their informational posters about an animal they chose.
Letter/sound focus: /p/, /h/ and short a

Math
Instead of beginning a new chapter this week we will review and take some time to focus on practicing addition facts. The kids are loving adding and are very proud of themselves to be working on such "grown up" math.

Thanks for reading, everyone! And thank you, parents and grandparents, for all of your help in and out of the classroom so far this year. I am so grateful for all of you.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Week of December 7-11, 2015

Hello families!
Thank you to everyone for meeting with me this week and last week during parent/teacher conferences. I enjoyed talking about your children and learning more about your families!

We have a lot going on in Room 4 and at Phoebe Hearst during the next couple of weeks.

Important Dates/Field Trip
Wednesday, December 9: Picture make-up day and class group photo day. Everyone has free dress.

Thursday, December 10: PH craft fair, 6-8 pm. Our class made adorable hot cocoa mugs to sell at the fair. Be sure to stop by and pick one up!

Friday, December 18: School is out for winter break! We will have free dress.

Monday, January 4: First day back to school

Friday, January 15: Field trip to see the Sacramento Theater Company's production of James and the Giant Peach. The cost for this trip is $6 per child (PTO is also paying $6 per child). Please send this to room 4 no later than December 11, as we have to pay in advance. If you would like to chaperone this trip, adult tickets are $17 each, and these need to be purchased in advance as well, so please let me know asap if you'd like to attend, and then you can send in money for your ticket with your child's payment. We were told tickets are limited for this, so to be fair I will take chaperones on a first-come basis.

Language Arts
We have started reading informational texts this week, and the kids are loving reading books about topics that interest them. This week each child chose an animal to research. They will read books about their chosen animal and with the help of 5th grade buddies search for information online. They will present their research on an informational poster. Next week's homework will include searching online for a photo of their animal for their poster. Thank you for your help with this!

As always, we are continuing to work on letter sounds and blending them to read and write words. This time of year is a lot of fun because for many kids everything seems to "click", and they start reading and writing more and more independently.

Math
We started our first chapter on addition this week, which you probably saw in Thursday's homework.

Thank you for reading, everyone! Please let me know if you have questions or concerns.

Week of October 12-16

Hello Room 4 families!
We had such a good week in room 4. The kids have been working so hard, and their work is showing in all of the gains I am already seeing in reading and writing. Thank you parents for reinforcing our school work at home by reading with your child daily and helping your child when necessary with homework.

Here is what we have coming up:

Friday 10/16: Jog-a-Thon envelopes are due no later than 8:10 am for your child to be eligible for prizes. You can send these in to school any day this week.
We will be working in the garden on this day with our 5th grade buddies. The kindergarteners and 5th graders are enjoying working together so much. On Friday afternoons be sure to ask your child if he or she saw their buddy at school and what they did together.

Thursday 10/22: Kinder field trip to Dave's Pumpkin Patch
Thank you to everyone who sent in the $5.50 for the trip and to those who volunteered to chaperone. I am waiting for fingerprint verification from the district office for several people, so I will confirm with many of you when our office has the verification.
Remember kids need to bring a lunch that day because we will be eating at the pumpkin patch.

Saturday 10/24:Phoebe Hearst Harvest Festival
This is such a fun afternoon for PH families and friends to come a play carnival games, wear costumes, and see friends. Each class is responsible for running a booth, which of course would not be possible without volunteers. Our class is doing a tattoo and facepainting booth, and we really need help with volunteer facepainters. I promise our facepainting designs will be simple! Volunteer shifts can be 30 to 60 minutes.
If you work at the Harvest Festival (or any school event) you can log double parent volunteer hours for yourself. Please contact our room parents Melody ( melodyaf@hotmail.com ) or Erica (ericalleonard@gmail.com ) if you can help. Thank you for supporting room 4 and PH!

Language Arts
This week we continue to work with rhymes, letter names and sounds, and listening for spoken words in sentences. We have begun counting and isolating words we hear in spoken sentences, which will help when your child begins to read and write complete sentences.
New sight words: he and she.
Letter focus: Qq, Rr, Ss, Tt
We also will continue to study how authors tell stories from pictures. We will talk about emotions that characters have and look for these details in stories we read.

Math
On Thursday we will take our Topic 3 test on numbers to 10.
On Friday we will begin Topic 4: Comparing and Ordering Numbers 0 to 10.

This week's student of the week will be Kyle. Please be sure to stop by and check out her poster and the letters from her classmates! (the letters will be up Tuesday)

Thank you for reading, everyone! Please do not hesitate to email me with any questions or concerns.

Week of October 5-9, 2015

Hello families!
What a busy week! We worked on finding our fire through kindness and community building, worked on letters and writing sentences with our sight words, learned about self-portraits with Ms Jane, practiced comparing numbers to 5, started the Royal Reader program, met with our 5th grade buddies, and worked in the Phoebe Garden for the first time. Whew!  We all need a couple of days to rest before we get right back to work.

Here is what we have coming up:
Pumpkin Patch field trip---Thursday, October 22.
As I mentioned at back-to-school night, we will be heading to Dave's pumpkin patch in West Sacramento on 10/22. We will leave on school buses at 9:30am and return in time for dismissal. The cost is $5.50 per student. This includes activities at the pumpkin patch and a small pumpkin. You can send the money to school beginning today--just clearly label it with your child's name. All children will need to bring a bag lunch that day. We will eat at the pumpkin patch before returning to school. Parents who have been fingerprinted are welcome to join us on the trip. Please let me know as soon as possible if you'd like to chaperone.

Student of the Week
We will begin celebrating one student each week beginning on Monday October 12. The Thursday before your child's week, I will send home a poster to complete. S/he will return the poster on Monday, and present it to the class. The other students will write letters to your child, and these will be displayed in the classroom with the poster on our student of the week bulletin board. The student of the week is our line leader and helps with any other jobs that pop up throughout the week. It is a special time for the kids. I will present a poster about myself next week as an example before we begin with kids.

Royal Reader
Hopefully you saw the bright orange Royal Reader form that came home with the October newsletter on Wednesday. The will take the place of our reading logs. Please help your child log the number of minutes s/he reads or is read to outside of school. The back of the log explains the program and the prizes kids can earn for reading, reading, reading. The logs are due at the end of each month. If you misplace a log, you can logs minutes on any calendar and turn that in for credit.

Language Arts
Letter focus: Mm, Nn, Oo, and Pp
New sight words: and, we
I encourage families to have a sight word wall displayed somewhere at home. Ask your child to read and write the words periodically. Use flash cards and make up games where your child reads the words, makes up sentences that include the words, and writes the words. As soon as the majority of kids have mastered the kindergarten words we move to the first grade list.
Comprehension and writing: we continue this week to focus on telling stories from pictures. We have been working a lot on details in stories and illustrations.

Math
We will take our Topic 2 test on comparing numbers 1-5 on Monday. On Tuesday we will begin Topic 3, numbers 6-10.

Science
We have begun our first life science unit on plants. During this unit we will focus primarily on pumpkins because of our upcoming field trip. Topics covered will include what plants need to live, how plants grow, how people use plants, and comparing different types of plants with one another.

Thank you for reading!! Please don't hesitate to email or stop by room 4 if you have any questions or concerns. Have a fantastic weekend.

Here is what we have coming up:

Language arts
This week we continue to work on recognizing letters shapes and forming letters correctly. We will focus on Ii, Jj, Kk, and Ll.
This week's new sight words: I and see
We have begun our first reading comprehension unit on telling stories from pictures and illustrations. We have looked at many wordless books and discussed what the characters are doing, what they are saying, and where they are. This lays the foundation not only for understanding the stories we read, but also for becoming good storytellers ourselves. We have been getting our own ideas for realistic and imaginary stories we can tell using illustrations.

Math
This week we will finish up our chapter on comparing and ordering numbers to 5. We will take the chapter test on Monday 10/5.
Chapter 3 will focus on numbers six through ten.

Wish list items
We have a new drawing table out at recess. If you have any paper to donate (any color, size, or density) we would appreciate it. You can drop off in room 4 any time.
The kids also enjoy using extra large Lego-like blocks at recess. If you have some at home your kids no longer use please consider sending them to school.

Lost and Found
We are starting quite a collection in the back of room 4. With cool mornings and warm afternoons kids take off their sweaters and forget to hang them up or leave them on the yard. If you're missing anything, come check what we have in the back off the room. As a reminder, please label all outerwear with your child's name.

Thanks for reading! Please email me with any questions.

This week we begin chapter 2 on comparing and ordering numbers 0-5. You will see these concepts in our nightly homework. Each homework page corresponds to the lesson we will work on that day, so try not to skip ahead with the math this week!

Decodable and Pre-Decodable books:
On Friday your child should have taken home their first pre-decodable book, "The Park". The purpose of these books is for children to practice print concepts and sight words. They will get about one book a week, so I encouraged them in class to keep them in a safe spot together and practice them. They should point to the words as they read. Next week's book will have all of our new sight words to practice.

Thank you for reading, everyone. Please let me know if you have questions. Have a super weekend.

Week of February 9-13, 2015

Hello Room 4 Families,
We are getting ready for a very busy week in Room 4 with the 100th day of school, our field trip to see "The Artful Mouse", and our Valentine celebration.

Important Dates

Monday, February 9: NO SCHOOL; Lincoln's birthday holiday

Thursday, 2/12: the 100th day of school. The kids are super excited to celebrate the number 100 and everything they have learned so far this year! During the days leading up to this the kids will have an extra homework assignment: they will need to bring in a collection of 100 items. They can get as creative as they want with this! Some kids choose to do an art project with 100 pieces, and others prefer to round up a collection of something simple like pennies. Both of these are great. I shared lots of ideas with the kids, and several children have brought their collections in already!  On the 100th day they will share their collection.

THANK YOU to those parents who have been sending in food items for our 100th day trail mix. Please send these in no later than Wednesday so I can get everything ready early Thursday morning.
And another THANK YOU to those who have volunteered to help that day with our centers time. We are looking forward to having you in our classroom.

Friday, 2/13 : Field Trip to Luther Burbank High School for the Sacramento Childrens' Theater play. We will leave at 9:15 am and return around 11:30.  I hope everyone received the permission slips yesterday. Please send these back to school no later than Tuesday 2/10.

When we return from the play, we will have our Valentine celebration.
For Valentine's Day, kids can bring Valentine cards filled out with their names, but please don't put the recipients' names on each card. This creates chaos when passing them out!
For this celebration I'd love to have about 2 more parent helpers. Please let me know if you would like to come in from about 11:45-1:00pm.

The 13th is also a free dress spirit day. Kids can come in free dress as long as they wear red, pink, or white.

Later that evening is the PH PTO family dance. It's a very fun event, so plan on attending with your family! It's from 6-8 pm in the molti-purpose room (cafeteria).

Monday, 2/16: NO SCHOOL; Presidents' Day

Friday, 2/20-Friday, 2/27 Shortened days/ parent teacher conferences. Dismissal will be at 11:50 or 12:20 from the cafeteria.
I sent emails this week to everyone I would like to meet with during conferences. If you did not receive an email and you would like to meet please let me know. I am happy to meet with everyone!

Language Arts
Letter/sound focus: /l/, /n/.
We are continuing to work on putting sounds together to make words both orally and in written form. So many kids have become readers in the last month; it's wonderful to see!
In writing we are finishing up an informational paragraph on how to play a favorite sport.

Math
This week we will finish up our chapter on more addition and subtraction. We will also do a lot of work with the number 100. We have been practicing counting to 100 by 1s, 5s, and 10s, and we will group objects in 10s this week to make 100.

Thanks for reading, everyone!
