Here's what's happening in Room 4:

important dates:
Tuesday, April 23-Wednesday, May 8: STAR testing for grades 2-6 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. We will be changing our schedule slightly so we won't disturb test-takers. We will not have recess until 10am on those days. Also, all parent volunteers will need to sign in at the front office and then come through the side kinder gate. The office has a list of our volunteers and during testing times only those on the list will be able to come in. Thanks for your understanding with this.

Friday, April 26: Fairytale Town field trip. We will leave on the bus at about 9:30 and return at about 12. Please send a lunch with your child that day. We will be eating at the park. Also, please send $2.25 for admission to school by Thursday if you haven't already done so.

Friday, May 10: Mother's Day Tea in Room 4, 12-1. Moms, please send in your RSVPs!

The kids will begin writing a narrative about the busy life of bees.

Math
This week we will continue to practice addition skills. We are working on fact families will addends up to 10. A fact family is all of the possible ways to make a number. So, the fact family for 4 is 0+4, 1+3, 2+2, 3+1, and 4+0.

Social Studies
This week we finish our unit on work people do. We will be talking about jobs today and comparing them with similar jobs from long ago.

I'd like to give a big THANK YOU to the parents who came with us on the Trader Joe's field trip this week and to Sarah Z'berg for coordinating with Fred, the store manager. We had a great time on the trip, and the kids seemed to love seeing the back of the store and learning what goes on back there. Field trips would not be possible without so much parent help!!

Have a great weekend, everyone! Please email me at carrie-relles@scusd.edu or carrie.relles@gmail.com if you have any questions or concerns.

I hope you all received the letter last week about sight words. If your child doesn't know all of the words yet, please practice these daily.

This week the kids will be finishing their writing about how they can help take care of the earth, and then will write a paragraph about our field trip.

Week of April 8-12, 2013

Hello Room 4 Families!
April is off to a great start in room 4.

Important Dates:
Monday, April 15: Scholastic Book Faire. Our class will go at 10am. Information went home about this in the April packet before spring break.
Wednesday, April 17th: Field trip to Trader Joe's and East Portal Park, 9:30am. THANK YOU to all of the parents who volunteered to attend. We do have enough volunteers for this trip. Please note the kids will need to bring a lunch on this day so we can have a picnic in the park.
Friday, April 26th: Fairy Tale Town field trip. We do need 1-2 more parent volunteers for this one. Please let me know if you've been fingerprinted and would like to join us. Please note the kids will also need to bring lunch on this day. We will eat at Fairy Tale Town.

Language Arts:
We started the Teamwork unit this week. We will be reading and writing about using teamwork to get a job done. We will focus on the sounds of /x/, /z/, and /w/ next week, and we will continue to practice reading and writing words with all of the sounds and spellings previously introduced.
In writing, the kids are finishing up paragraphs on how to play their favorite sport. In the middle of next week we will begin paragraphs on what we can do to help take care of the earth (Earth Day is April 20!)
Their writing is looking really great. We are focusing on writing topic and concluding sentences, and the majority of kids have begun to remember to do this on their own. If you'd like to see some of their writing, stop by the room and check it out!

Math:
We are finishing up the geometry chapter this week by taking our tests on Monday and Tuesday. Then we will start chapter 11 on addition concepts. The first lessons will focus on using objects to show addition problems.

Social Studies:
We started a unit called Work People Do. In this chapter the kids are learning about the world of work. They are learning that when people work, they are helping others in their homes, school, and community. Some jobs are outside jobs, and some are inside jobs. The kids will also compare and contrast jobs from long ago with similar jobs today.

Supplies:
We are running low on dry erase markers (the thick black expo markers) and glue sticks. If you'd like to send some in, we'd really appreciate it!
