Week of April 8-12, 2013

Hello Room 4 Families!
April is off to a great start in room 4.

Important Dates:
Monday, April 15: Scholastic Book Faire. Our class will go at 10am. Information went home about this in the April packet before spring break.
Wednesday, April 17th: Field trip to Trader Joe's and East Portal Park, 9:30am. THANK YOU to all of the parents who volunteered to attend. We do have enough volunteers for this trip. Please note the kids will need to bring a lunch on this day so we can have a picnic in the park.
Friday, April 26th: Fairy Tale Town field trip. We do need 1-2 more parent volunteers for this one. Please let me know if you've been fingerprinted and would like to join us. Please note the kids will also need to bring lunch on this day. We will eat at Fairy Tale Town.

Language Arts:
We started the Teamwork unit this week. We will be reading and writing about using teamwork to get a job done. We will focus on the sounds of /x/, /z/, and /w/ next week, and we will continue to practice reading and writing words with all of the sounds and spellings previously introduced.
In writing, the kids are finishing up paragraphs on how to play their favorite sport. In the middle of next week we will begin paragraphs on what we can do to help take care of the earth (Earth Day is April 20!)
Their writing is looking really great. We are focusing on writing topic and concluding sentences, and the majority of kids have begun to remember to do this on their own. If you'd like to see some of their writing, stop by the room and check it out!

Math:
We are finishing up the geometry chapter this week by taking our tests on Monday and Tuesday. Then we will start chapter 11 on addition concepts. The first lessons will focus on using objects to show addition problems.

Social Studies:
We started a unit called Work People Do. In this chapter the kids are learning about the world of work. They are learning that when people work, they are helping others in their homes, school, and community. Some jobs are outside jobs, and some are inside jobs. The kids will also compare and contrast jobs from long ago with similar jobs today.

Supplies:
We are running low on dry erase markers (the thick black expo markers) and glue sticks. If you'd like to send some in, we'd really appreciate it!
